The Muslims are descended from Slavs residing in central Yugoslavia who, in the Middle Ages, embraced the Bogomil heresy, a type of Western Zoroastrianism, and have been persecuted consequently. They welcomed the Turkish conquest in the 15th century as a launch from this, and converted to Islam.

Bosnia is the northern half, named after a river as soon as called the Bosanius, whereas Herzegovina, previously the land of Hum, owes its name to the German word Herzog, or duke.
